Sometimes, you’ll want to protect certain elements or text in your design so customers can’t accidentally move or change them. That’s where the lock feature comes in — giving you more control over what’s editable in your templates.
Lock Objects So Customers Can’t Edit Them
Use object locking to protect parts of a template that must stay fixed or uneditable.
What locking does
When you lock an object, customers cannot:
- Select it
- Move it
- Resize it
- Rotate it
- Interact with it in any way
This keeps required content consistent across customer edits.
When to lock objects
Lock any object that should stay fixed so customers can edit only the intended fields. This usually includes critical artwork, required text, structural layout elements, and decorative items that keep spacing, alignment, and overall composition intact.
Or, you can choose to keep everything unlocked to give your customers complete freedom to change the design in any way they'd like.
Lock an object (Toolbar method)
1. Open your template in the design area.
2. Select the object you want to protect.
3. Click the Lock icon in the toolbar.
4. Save your template.
Lock an object (Layers panel method)
1. Open the Layers panel.
2. Find the layer/object you want to protect.
3. Click the Lock icon next to that layer.
4. Repeat for other objects, then save.
The Layers panel is best for overlapping or hard-to-select objects.
Unlock an object (Seller only)
1. Select the locked object from the Layers panel. You won't be able to select it from the canvas.
2. Click the Unlock icon.
3. Make your changes.
4. Re-lock the object if needed, then save.
Best practices for seller templates
- Only lock objects that you know you will never want the customer to edit.
- Test the template as a customer before publishing.
Troubleshooting
If a customer reports “I can’t edit this object”:
1. Confirm the object is intentionally locked.
2. Decide whether that element should be editable.
3. Unlock it in the customer's template and the original template if needed, save.
If you can’t select or edit an object on the canvas as a seller:
1. Check the Layers panel for lock status.
2. Unlock the layer.
Customer impact note
Customers cannot lock or unlock objects. They can only edit elements you leave unlocked.
